The Recidivist

Michael Boezi

Old habits and ideas imprison us. Change is challenging, especially when media & entertainment preach passivity. Simplicity is a salve to our oversaturated brains. Breaking free of this requires immense uphill effort. Recovery from it is not a straight line. The Recidivist is my Mr. Tambourine Man. While he ”plays a song for me,” I sink deeper and deeper into regression until I’m the one recruiting others with my own version of his siren song.

Lyrics

I was counting on you, counting backwards
Counting out the facts and factors

We talked it out and talked around it
I played my tape and then rewound it

Since we’ve reached another end
It’s up to me to start again
I’ll start again

I was counting on you, I recounted
Counting out how bad it sounded

Disoriented, out of balance
Regressing back into to my old habits

I went to see the Recidivist
He was singing that familiar song

I went to see the Recidivist
He was singing that same old song

Oh, oh, oh! Lapse into another relapse
Subdue the crackling of a synapse
Just lapse into another relapse

Invigorated by permission
To settle back into remission

I touch the candle with a lighter
And chant the mantra, my reminder…

Oh, oh, oh! To put some gaps into the synapse

Swirling in my head, surrounded
By views I held and never doubted

So I can pass for an insider
With all the skills that I’ve acquired

I learned to be the Recidivist
Now I can sing this familiar song

I learned to be the Recidivist
Now I'm singing that same old song

Oh, oh, oh! Lapse into another relapse
Oh, oh, oh! So you can get some rest and relax

Oh, oh, oh! Let’s set you up with YOUR own relapse
First, stock the fridge with beer & cheese snacks
Enjoy the reruns and nightly recaps
The quips, attacks, and scripted comebacks
From D-list actors stacking wisecracks
In sitcoms stiff with phony laugh tracks

The only well-spent time is when you relax
So lapse into another relapse
