Carry This

Xs & ARROWs

Carry This was written in Eaton Canyon, which sits at the end of my street in Altadena, California, after a simultaneous internal and external storm. As my nervous system screamed, I gravitated to the roaring river to drown it out. This acoustic arrangement (a full band version will follow eventually) was recorded in 2024, and, fittingly, delayed due to the Eaton Fire of January 2025, which started mere yards from where I had been writing. It destroyed most of the town and killed 19 people. Seems fitting that a song about trauma was birthed in a place that has since caused so much. If you have two voices in your head that love to argue about how safe you are in the world (or if you just have one that knows, without argument, that you aren't), this is for you. - Courtney

Lyrics

Wait, be very still
Feel the restless beat upon the shore
Stay until the clouds come rolling faster
Gifting lightning to exhilarate your mind

Retain your will
Just to keep from falling backwards
Let the tide rise up and
Carry you awhile

Ooh, drop your wariness
Ooh, the tide will carry this
Let it carry you awhile

Hey, what did you say?
"Clench your fists while you are sleeping,
Keep the guards up all hours of the night"

Hey, what did you say?
I hear you conjuring old memories
The storms of this unease that I can’t shake

Ooh, lean right into it
Ooh, the storm will carry this
Ooh, turn it over to the tide
Let it carry you awhile

I always swore you know I swore
I’d be the best of me
I’ve been at war I’m still at war
With the rest of me
So let me play this out
I think I’ve got it down

Oh, your voice or mine
Two sides of the same desire
It’s my choice this time
Remember what’s passed is through
Believe that you are safe in this deluge

Ooh, walk right into it
Ooh, the storm will carry this
Ooh, turn it over to the tide
And let it carry you awhile
